"The Bird Might Not Take Off Under These Conditions”

Referencing an airplane he apparently is sitting in or ready to board, Gil Scott Heron makes the aircraft analogy above in his song Winter in America. In it, he speaks and sings about a political climate in America that is “frozen.”

He states, “Lately, there has been no spring, no summer and no fall; politically and philosophically and psychologically. There has only been the season of ice. It is a season of frozen dreams and frozen nightmares, a scene of frozen progress, and frozen ideas, frozen aspirations and inspirations.” (Is this not where we are today?)

Later, in a piece memorializing his life, Gil speaks about personal values; family, personal pride, reputation, respect and honor and citizenship, referencing voting rights fighter Fannie Lou Hamer, he describes as a diminutive force of nature, and points out that“there is nothing wrong with standing up for what you believe in” and emphasizing the point, that “there is something very wrong with not standing up for what you believe in”

He speaks of community and contribution. “When you are urged to do something is one thing, but when you are led, somebody threatens to be the only one who goes and you don’t go.”

“…there’s a lot of things to be done” so the last thing, the last thing that’s available to you is your right to complain, if you ain’t going to do nothing else, don’t say nothing, just shut up.”

“all we want people to do is to accomplish something as opposed to criticizing the people who didn’t get to do that for you yet.”

“You can always find something to complain about”

“Either contribute or shut up”

“If someone comes to you for help and you can help them, you suppose to help them. Why wouldn’t you?”

My Politics On Sabbatical

My politics have been on sabbatical.

When I have written about political stuff in this blog, it has mainly been about the last Presidential election in the United States. Since the election, with the exception of supporting the President's platform and financially as much as I can, I have not had much to say publicly, or privately for that matter.

Politics to me is much like the news media, quite theatrical. Not that many of our elected officials are not good intentioned, their survival and seemingly their efforts to assure that their particular policies and intentions are implemented, cause them to compromise their trustworthiness and integrity.

I was quite active during the election and several months following it in continuing to support our President in action. Several people whom I worked with during the election and after became good friends and have continued in their political endeavors. I miss them all.

I write this post merely to explain my absence in the last year in writing anything here. I will look to see what the future brings in that regard as Barack Obama continues to inspire me as a human being and as a world citizen (I know many folks have a problem with that characterization) although I could, and I have not, questioned is politics..

Overcrowded Emergency Rooms

In my 30 year career in hospital and public health administration, I never fully understood why hospital administrators complain so much about overcrowded emergency rooms. I have run hospitals and that never was a concern of mine although my staff physicians complained about seeing non emergent patients. I understood their desire to be most productive in using their talents in treating emergency and critically ill and injured patients as they had spent many extra years of education and training to do so. The problem, however, in my judgment, lied in ill-organized hospitals and emergency departments making them costly and not productive.

I do not take exception to the concern entirely, but I do not think Congress or any part of government should have to shoulder coming up with the solution for overcrowded ER’s by non emergent patients, at least, beyond the possibly of it, perhaps, implementing measures to require hospitals to "reform" their organizations and provide some additional incentives for them to do so.

I understand Detroit Medical Center, or it may be another hospital in Detroit, that has been quite successful in structuring its ER in a manner that results in it being treated as an asset; not a liability or burden. The ER is seen as a primary feeder to the hospital for admissions and a viable resource in providing health education, preventative health services as well as medical delivery. A former colleague of mine, (I am now retired) who is an attorney with a prominent law firm in the US and specializes in hospital restructuring, may be able to provide some guidance or resources to assist this situation. White House Visit, Cinco de Mayo

In celebration of Cinco de Mayo, I was invited to the White House last night by The President and Mrs. Obama.

I arrived about 4:45PM before the event that was scheduled to start at 5:00PM. (Don’t be late for White House events I learned. They start on time). My first stop was the bathroom after checking my coat in the Library. I do not know which Library it was. While in the bathroom I called my eldest daughter Leslie and told her that I was in the White House in one of the bathrooms and she could boast that her voice was in the White House.

I do not want to make this too long a story. I am going to jump to the 10 minute talk The President presented in his usual eloquent, confident and expert way. He was joined on the podium by Mrs. Obama, Vice President Biden and Mrs. Biden and the ambassador from Mexico and his wife. Following the President’s talk, I found my way through the crowd, I approximate at 3-400 people and introduced myself to Mrs. Biden. I told her that she was doing a Great job. I then found my way to the Vice President and said; “Hello Mr. Vice President; my name is Oscar Carter from New York. I want to let you know you are doing a Great job.” He then said in his usual stern voice, “Hello Oscar Carter from New York, thank you very much.”

Then I found my way to The President. I went up to him, introduced myself and handed him my card that states Creating A World Community. I told him that he stole Creating A World Community from me. He seemed a little confused. I told him that after reading The Audacity of Hope, it was clear to me that he had stolen Creating A World Community from me. He then stated, laughingly, "You know, yes I did" while I observed him putting my card in his left side pants pocket. I then told him he was doing a fantastic job and excused myself.

I next attempted to work my way to Mrs. Obama. I found it harder to get to her and it seemed that every time I got close to introduce myself, she would turn the other way and greet someone else. I even felt I should "cool out" a bit with a thought that people might think I was stalking her. After a good 10 minutes, perhaps 15, I noticed one of her escorts, a gentleman, whisper to a female escort which I assumed at the time and later learned in speaking with him that he wanted her to direct Mrs. Obama to me. In fact, the female escort actually pulled Mrs. Obama by the waist and turned her toward me at which point I introduced myself to Mrs. Obama. I told her I wanted her to know that she was the main reason I had decided to work on the Campaign. (I had never been involved with politics previously) I told her I had memorized her stump speech about fear and how she did not want her daughters to grow up in a country, in a world, based on fear. I told her I identified with the speech because I also have two daughters and felt that if she was willing to put her daughters on the line, (that's the way it occurred for me) that I could step out my comfort and campaign for Barack Obama's candidacy for President. I then told her that in that speech she referenced her husband as being "Special." I pointed my finger at her and said, "I want you to know, You are Special." She enthusiastically gave me a big smile in acknowledgment and said, "thank you Oscar, I really appreciate that" I excused myself and enjoyed meeting a few other people over wine, and h'orderves and some great Mexican music.

I am very proud and thankful for President Barack Obama, his family and our Administration.

Until Barack Obama’s Presidential Campaign, I had never been involved with politics. The reason to a large extent may be due to my biggest learning during the campaign.

What excited me most was the openness and transparency about which and under which President Obama spoke and ran. It was that and his ability to inspire hope and possibility that caused me to work so hard on his, my and all of our behalf’s. It was exciting to see how so many people were empowered when they also got involved in the process.

Contrary to my experience with the Campaign, I learned how our organizations, institutions, and yes even the nations we have built across the world have separated us from one another. President Obama found a way to bring people together with a common vision toward a common end.

Over the last week in working with the Organizing for America initiative, I have watched and experienced people, in the name of “grassroots” effort initiating organizations, groups and taking actions that have become and are becoming politicized, taking on lives of their own and separating themselves from others as well as the masses. Although I believe in the mantra, "All is Good," to the extent the foregoing continues to occur, achieving “Change We Can Believe In” will be delayed.

We must build open organizing systems and other initiatives and efforts that are inclusive and transparent. If we do not, we will continue to separate, alienate and in fact cause conflict with one another that will not be productive. I believe we all believe in a common good and desire a world that works for all. We will accomplish that by working together, and I will agree with opposition as well, so long as it is peaceful and respectful.

Organizing For America--Upper Manhattan Day of Action (Pledge Project Canvass)

Yesterday, I accepted a request from Ben Baruch, Volunteer Liaison for Organizing for America, New York to “lead” a March 21st effort in Upper Manhattan to initiate a sustained grassroots movement that will change the political dialogue in our great country.

My intention is the community creates a “landmark” event hosted by Harlem’s own Hue-Man Bookstore & Café at 2319 Frederick Douglass Blvd as part of the national day of action in support of President Obama’s plan to stimulate and transform America's economy. The specific task is to canvas the community between the hours of 12:30PM and 3:30PM on the 21st and to actively seek our neighbors 'pledge' to stand behind three key initiatives, energy, health care and education.

Again, The Relevancy of Race

I leave from New York City with my wife, Tina, tomorrow excited and determined to have a fantastic time.

Today and before the inaugural, I completed reading Dreams From My Father, by President-Elect Barack Obama. It was a goal I had since the election. I was particularly attentive to Barack’s inquiry into race during his journey from childhood to his first visit to Kenya. His inquiry mirrored the one I have held over the past several years, relative to the relevancy of “race” in our national and for that matter, our global discourse. I take away an answer consistent with the position I have held over this period; that race has no place in today’s discourse, at least, no more than the color of one’s hair, eyes, etc. I have, you may have read in this blog, have had a similar inquiry about the place the label “African-American” has in today’s world. My answer is the same. There is no place for it, certainly in the interest of empowerment of the population which others and the people who use the term define or otherwise label itself.

I won’t belabor the point further here. My position is consistent with themes I have held on race in various posts throughout this blog.

Walking home from a restaurant where I completed reading the final pages of the book, I stopped for coffee at Starbucks. When I got home, I read the following quote printed on my cup.

“People need to see that, far from being an obstacle, the world’s diversity of languages, religions and traditions is a great treasure, affording us precious opportunities to recognize ourselves in others.” Youssou N’Dour (Musician)

To that extent, perhaps there is some relevancy.

What Now? A Philosophical Thought During the Transition (Click Picture to Enlarge)

With the newly elected United States Congress and President-Elect, many people have taken a wait and see attitude during the transition. Others are viewing the declining American and global marketplace and economy and becoming more and more fearful of their ability to sustain their livelihoods and in fact their survival in some instances. Others are looking for bailouts, concessions and sympathy. All these viewpoints are antithetic to the expression of more assuring thoughts and forward actions that I believe are essential to realizing our individual comforts and ambitions and collective aspirations for a better world.

Very soon after learning of Barack Obama’s decision to run for President of the United States, I consistently maintained a strong sense that he would win the election. It was his relentless articulation of all that was possible for the American people and the world that enabled me to be so confident. I also believe it was that articulation of possibility that resonated with so many people giving him the majority of the populous vote and winning the election.

It is that same view and belief in what’s possible that is the source of our individual and collective thinking and actions that will enable us to advance our lives, our country and our world. I often think back on Michelle Obama’s stomp speech on fear. She says in part, “…we have this window of opportunity, we have a chance to make something real happen, something possible happen, to live beyond our fear. Think about that.”Look forward and inquire into all that is possible. Expect the unexpected to occur in favor of and for the benefit of society as a whole and ourselves.

It is entirely your responsibility to achieve the life you desire. It has always been that way and it will continue to be that way. You are the one accountable. Any long term and true benefit you receive will be the result of what you have achieved.

The Power of Being Part of Something Magnificent

I am back home in New York City after spending 30 days on the Campaign trail in Philadelphia.

My story began following reading the Audacity of Hope in the early summer of 2007. It was my first time being introduced to Barack Obama. Somehow I missed his 2004 keynote address at the Democratic National Convention, although I had heard much talk about it.

The book greatly inspired me learning President elect Obama’s vision for all he saw possible in the world was closely aligned with my thoughts as expressed in an initiative I started four years ago at Creating A World Community. Soon after completing the book, I was approached in Harlem at the Annual African-American Week Celebration by a young man who asked whether I would like to volunteer for the Campaign. Having recently quit (formerly retired) my job to pursue several entrepreneurial ventures, I saw volunteering as a way to give back to my community; so I accepted.

The last time I was involved in a political campaign was in high school when I ran for vice president of student council, which I happened to win. The incriminating fact I have shamelessly been willing to admit is although I was a product of the civil rights movement in the sixties, I largely missed and ignored much of what was occurring as I was partying and drinking much of time while completing college. I think it was that which made the whole notion of Change At this Moment speak loudly to me and At This Time; wanting to be a part of the Movement.

For a year and a half I participated with members of the Harlem 4 Obama grassroots group and became someone the group seemed to look to as an elder and more experienced leader. All of them were in their early to mid-20’s and I was 61. I never felt out of touch, however, and found myself working very effectively with them. In September, I completed Camp Obama and accepted a deputy field organizer assignment in southwest Philadelphia. I find interesting to note again that all the paid staff on the Campaign were in their 20's and Mario, who I enjoyed referring to as my 21 old boss was magnificent.

My experience in southwest Philly became my most enjoyable and rewarding time working on behalf of the Campaign. I found most rewarding being able to attract and “cause” many people in the community who have felt disenfranchised and apathetic towards politics and government to volunteer and become excited and feel empowered in participating in the various tasks of registering people and getting the vote out. I saw many of these people literally transform in front my eyes in becoming more alive, excited and enthusiastic about being part of this phenomenal movement. It was a magnificent feeling to be able to make that contribution; one that I will cherish forever.

At this time, I am moved to continue to work on behalf of our President-elect and his administration in some capacity and look forward to identifying the right opportunity as early as possible.

A young lady who could not have been more than 19 years old or so with the black scarf on her head came in to the campaign office donating food that she went out and purchased at a local grocery store.

This blog is about Creating A World Community. Sometimes I feel people reading it might not see the relevance of my frequent posts about Barack Obama and the upcoming presidential election.

I would like people to understand that Barack's candidacy and his vision is completely aligned with the vision I created four years ago in creating a world that works for everyone. In this post, I want to share another message that is stretching my commitment to the campaign as well as my vision of Creating A World Community. I have taken on an assignment for the Campaign of being a Deputy Field Director in Pennsylvania, a state it says we must win in order to win the election. I will be stationed in Philadelphia from September 29 through election day on November 4th. I am very proud and excited over my assignment, although I have some apprehension being away from my wife for that period of time. She on the other hand has supported me every step of the way. Thank you, Tina. I love you.

They are placing me in a densely populated "African American" community in the inner city of Philadelphia, an area that apparently loves Obama but traditionally to a very large extent has not registered to vote and has been complacent in getting out to vote. My director has indicated to me that "we must channel that energy" of love into votes.

I am ready to respond to many of the comments I have heard in the predominately African-American community where I live in Harlem, New York. My vote won't count, "they are not going to let a "Black Man" be president, they will "hurt him," he is part of the establishment, he is not going to be able to succeed in changing anything since he is only one person, and that very unfortunate comment that he is not "Black Enough'" I will not attempt to give my responses in this post but will be happy to address them specifically should you like me discuss any one of them. Just lend me your comment below.

In the meantime, I encourage you to register and to vote, and to get your friends and relatives to register to vote for Barack Obama. Let people know, they must be registered to vote and the deadline is fast approaching. In New York, it is October 10. In Washington, DC, it is October 6. Check with your Board of Elections and let people know.

We have an extraordinary opportunity to make this a better country and a better world. And Be Not Afraid. Listen to Michelle Obama's on YouTube as you speak and dialog with people. Think! Listen! It is up to us, individually, as Barack has been saying since day one and continuing to remind us.

REGISTER, VOLUNTEER AND VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA

Sunday, I completed Camp Obama which is the Campaign’s training program for Deputy Field Officers (DFO). With less than 50 days to the election on November 4th, our primary job as a DFO is to recruit and organize volunteers in “battleground states” to persuade undecided voters to cast their vote for Barack Obama, to register people to vote and to encourage people to get out to vote. The battleground states are those that have historically had results that have matched the results of the election and those that are currently being closely contested. The primary ones for Senator Obama are Pennsylvania, Ohio and Florida.

I want to highlight some of my learnings with an expectation you will gain some benefit from what I learned at the camp. First, allow me to make a simple statement about this “historic” election. It should be understood that the historic nature of this election goes far beyond the fact that for the first time in history an African-American is running for President and a woman is running for Vice President. What also makes this election historic, and more importantly in my view, is the fact that Senators Obama and to some extent McCain’s recent rhetoric places the two men's intention on substantially, if not radically, changing the manner in which our government does business. Assuming Obama is elected, and I believe he will be, if he were successful in implementing only half of the changes he has promised, it will have an enormous impact on the American people; more so than any other president in the recent past.

Here is a list of some of the things I learned over the weekend.

1. With Election Day only days away; and considering the present state of the economy, the security of our country and its stature in the world, Barack Obama’s “fierce urgency of now” has never been more relevant and important. In New York, voter registration ends October 10th. You should check with your state for its deadline immediately and make sure all your friends and relatives are registered.

2. We have a strong candidate with a definitive and specific platform outlining the steps he will take to address our economy, the war in Iraq and the nation’s image in the world. He will reduce taxes for 150 million Americans, including a $500 tax credit, he will enhance access to a quality education for every child including assuring an affordable college education, he will make health care affordable, he will end the war in Iraq responsibly and immediately begin bringing our troops home, he has the most aggressive cap and trade approach to achieve an 80% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, he will preserve a woman’s reproductive right to choose; he is a leading voice in Washington to end genocide in the Sudan and a major of fighter against HIV/AIDS. 3. As we campaign for Senator Obama as volunteers, we are, not concerned, let me repeat that, not concerned with the opposition, adversaries or what the media may be saying about our opponents. Let the Campaign Office with its high powered and extensively trained and experienced professional consultants handle that. We are focused on Senator Obama's message of change, respect, empowerment and inclusion and getting people out to vote for him. “We are choosing Hope over Fear, unity over division and sending a powerful message that Change is Coming to America,” and if you are inclined, the Change that is Coming to the World.

4. When engaging people in conversation about the election tell them your “personal story” about the Senator and/or this election. For me, as an example, having never participated in any political campaign or election previously, I decided to do so after reading The Audacity of Hope and feeling a need to contribute, to give something back after retiring from a 35 year career in hospital administration. Sometimes, I tell people how I missed the 60’s, the last major political transformational period in this country because I was partying most of the time and just plain old having a good time.

5. Demonstrate your excitement and enthusiasm for the senator and his campaign. Always present your best manners and dress appropriately when campaigning. Wear your Obama gear, buttons, hats and whatever to show your support.

6. Very important, express your appreciation to other volunteers for lending their time and support and ask them if they can volunteer more, tells them where to go to do so and sign them up.

7. You can volunteer in the campaign right at home if you have an internet connection. Go to Barack’s Neighbor to Neighbor program and make calls from home. You can even print out a customized flyer there that you can distribute.

Lastly, I want to briefly review a challenge I had this afternoon with a young woman who approached me and commented that she was undecided on the candidates. She commented she was a Republican. I asked her what was her concern and she responded that she was concerned that Obama would “change everything.” I asked her what was she concerned about him changing. She responded that he would change some things that are good as well as some of the things she considered the bad. At that point, I gave her a flyer that summarizes the senator’s platform on the major issues and directed her to his website. She then left and upon consideration, I feel she left having had an experienced of not being sufficiently served. What I would do next time, is to ask the person if there was anyway I could be helpful in addressing her concern. It would be nice if I had an opportunity to speak this lady again. I am comforted in knowing that I will do better next time.

If you listened to the speeches at the Democratic and Republican Conventions over the past two weeks and the commentary and reporting on them by the media, I would be interested in learning what you may have learned about communication. Well, perhaps not so much about communication but rather about human nature. I think that is it, yes human nature and intention.

I observed how, depending on who was doing the communicating, and the particular candidate that the communicator was supporting or leaning toward supporting, how any particular message can be interpreted and understood in so many different ways. No wonder we have difficulty communicating with one another.

When I first started noticing the vast differences in interpretations and meanings commentators, news reporters and others were giving to messages conveyed by the various speakers, I kept asking myself, “do these people really believe what they are saying?” I have come to the conclusion that they really do believe what they are saying and that I must admit for me it is an epiphany in learning that. I have had a habit of questioning people’s authenticity in what they say. I am not doing that any more. People really do mean what they say; at least what they are intending to say, and if not, it gets resolve through communication. My take away is to be fully committed to trusting what people say. I have to add a post script. I am not naïve enough to believe that the media as an institution does not direct and control much of the reporting and commentary that we hear, see and read everyday. I do not, however, any longer hold that against any individual or person.

AN EXTRAORDINARY SUMMMER

The end of August has generally ended the summer for me; back to school, time to buckle down at work, vacation and usually a significant drop in temperature. This year the summer ends for me following the extraordinary experiences I had. They include a month long visit with my wife to Tanzania in May and June, two weeks visiting my mother that included her move from her townhouse to an independent living apartment, a week long family reunion and a week at the Democratic National Convention where I experienced aside from the great speeches, a magnificent sense of community, togetherness, strength and compassion among a wide diverse of people that attended from neighborhoods all across the United States. The people in Denver were particularly welcoming and friendly from the time of arrival at the airport until our departure.

It was also a summer when I became clear on my vision and passion for Creating A World Community. I am excited by that possibility.

I am grateful for the time I spent with family and friends and with all the new people I met in Tanzania, at the convention and the people with whom I have met and been networking over the internet through the Creating A World Community portal. Fifty five people in eight countries including Canada, China, France, Ghana, Nevis, South Africa, Tanzania and the United States and now part of that initiative.

The Best, Most Enjoyable and Rewarding Summer of My Life. Thank you to everyone that contributed to it.

At the Democratic National Convention

OK. I have now heard Michelle Obama’s, Hillary Clinton’s and several other convincing speeches at the Democratic National Convention including Edward Kennedy’s and the exciting speech by Brian Schweitzer,Governor of Montana. I am now calling for not only the next 8 years but for the following 8 years after that of a continuing Obama White House. (8 Barack and 8 Michelle) Michelle’s articulation of all that is possible for America and the World and Hillary’s unleashed endorsement of Barack led me to that proposition.

Only now am I getting back to this blog post after attending the other two days of the Convention and traveling back to New York. I am more convinced of the legitimization of my call for 16 years of an Obama White House. Go Barack and Michelle. I love you both. You are truly phenomenal leaders.

What’s In A Hand Shake?

Last Thursday afternoon, I was present with my mother in Chesapeake, Virginia to hear Barack Obama host a town hall meeting at a local high school.
It is not the first time I have heard the Senator speak in person. I sat about four rows back from the stage when he was on at the Apollo theatre in New York, City last November. I continue to be inspired by the Senator and his message of Change. It was his wife, Michelle’s message at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZPm0jyBeEU, however, that caused me to decide to work on Barack’s campaign last summer; my first time ever to work on an electoral campaign since high school.
My wife, Tina, has been encouraging me to make an attempt "meet" the Senator. I have never been a person that was particularly motivated to meet people who I consider to be dignitaries. This time something moved me to attempt to at least shake his hand. I was able to do so by reaching over several people in a crowd in my 6’6” stature. I realized I shook his hand very firmly. I guess because I was so excited. I hope I did not hurt him.
What’s In A Hand Shake? In this case, something to brag about I have noticed since my experience. Then there was something that expressed the mortality of this modern day icon who so many people adore.
After learning of the Joe Biden selection for VP, I arrived in Denver this evening for the Democratic National Convention. I am excited over the things I will learn and the people I will meet. I will continue to explore What’s In A Hand Shake this week.

The Irrelevancy of Race, Culture and Ethnicity

Let's talk about the issues in the United States presidential elections. We can make this election be about deciding who is the best person for the job as opposed to one's race, culture, and even one's religion. These descriptions have no relevancy. Suppose Barack Obama was a Muslim and/or suppose John McCain was an Muslim. So what?

I do think we should be discussing race, culture and religion and that we should do so openly. As opposed to speaking about them as being a reason for denying or affirming a person for President or for whatever, however, the discussion should be about determining the relevancy of these descriptions or characteristics when making those decisions while respecting, and in fact, honoring those and whatever differences there may be.

We have the opportunity to elect a President who will and who has already changed this country and the world by articulating that which is possible. There is a clear choice here.

Four years ago, I envisioned Creating A World Community. I believed in the possibility of the vision then. Now, I can feel it and I see it all over the world. Where you say; in the 200,000 people in Berlin last week, in meetings I attend in my community, in people with whom I speak, in the comments I read in the forum and blogs in The Powerful Intentions Community and even on television some times when it appears commentators, although seemingly finding it a struggle to emphasize the good in people. I saw it in June among the people I met in Tanzania. And tonight, I found it on a website named The World Community Press.

Choice of Colors

Wow, what a day. It must have been 100 degrees outside and I decided to go to a book fair on 135th Street, here in Harlem, a community which in my view, is fast becoming the "Pulse of New York City and perhaps the World. More on that at another time.

Well, I do not know what I was expecting at the the book fair. I hadn't given it much prior thought. But what I found were "Black" authors, with the exception of a few writing about sex and love, describing social messages and engaging in dialogue about "Black" people rooted in the same old stories of deficit, lack of opportunity and "what they did to us" etc.,etc., etc. One gentleman told me he was afraid to write about what is possible for Black folk because "no one is willing to listen." I told him I, for one, would be in touch. I really do not want to be critical of Blacks who are taking up their pens big time these days to write and express their stories and views. That is great, but their messages and conversations about race and ethnic relations, as I suggest in my prior post, need to be redirected and framed on that which is possible as well as an appreciation of that which is best in people and society.

I am getting so sentimental these days. I cried. Mr. Mayfield sang exactly my sentiments. I like to joke, although it is not that far from the truth, that I missed most of the 60's because I was drunk. I certainly missed Choice of Colors.

Black In America

CNN is preparing to air what it calls an “unprecedented investigation” on July 27th entitled “Black In America.” I predict it will miss the opportunity to fulfill its mission, however, in making a measurable contribution in bettering race relations in this country.

From a political point of view, I have always understood the use of the term “Black” in contrast to “White” when distinguishing a certain group of people or person in this country and the world. But, I have never quite understood the term African-American that the investigators will use interchangeably in referring to Black people.

What is an African American? Jesse Jackson first urged the use of the term in a 1989 news conference. Notwithstanding his fraudulent comments that were widely reported in the press last week, Reverend Jackson commented at a meeting I attended in Africa a month ago, to 500 Black and White Africans and “African-Americans” from the United States, that the term African-American is “a social construct.” I agree. The only person I know that perhaps comes close to meeting the classification is Barack Obama who has a father who was born in Africa and a mother and himself who were born in the United States. In a New York Times article four years ago, Senator Obama described himself saying "For me, the term 'African-American' really does fit"; “I'm African – I trace half of my heritage to Africa directly – and I'm American." He speaks further to the relevancy of the term Black in referring to Africans and people who are descendants of the African Diaspora saying, "Some of the patterns of struggle and degradation that blacks here in the United States experienced aren't that different from the colonial experience in the Caribbean or the African continent,"

Although I do not take exception to Senator’s Obama’s description of himself or the experience of people who are descendants of the African Diaspora, I believe the terms Black and African-American have lost their usefulness in the dialogue to narrow the racial and cultural divide in this country and the world. We can continue to have the kind of conversations we seem to have most often in this country about race, color and ethnicity that are fundamentally ingrained in fear and lack of opportunity or we can transform those conversations to personal responsibility and accountability grounded in possibility and intrepidness in spite of those factors. Creating A World Community, in part, comprises the latter conversation. The terms African-American and Black have little relevancy in a World Community, that is a community that works for each and every person. To transcend the racial and ethnic divide, we need only to wake up and consistently respect, and in fact, honor, the differences we may choose to make relevant among one another.

I Cried At Dinner Tonight in Zanzibar

• I saw how in Zanzibar tonight at dinner.
• Do you know people do not fight in Zanzibar?
• I didn’t take note at first when our driver commented that the two people involved in an automobile accident would not argue. They, in fact, asked the policemen who arrived at the scene to leave them be because they had worked the situation out among themselves.
• I did not take note earlier in the day when Tina told me how hurt and concerned our tour guides were when she and I had one of our all too frequent arguments.
• And, there was the waiter at dinner who explained so completely that he was unable to serve us desert because the island had been without electricity for several weeks but was so concerned, he offered to make us a fruit salad.
• I cried at dinner tonight when I shared with our dinner guest WE ARE ALL ONE and a tear came to his eye.

More than ever, believe in a World Community that works for each and every person. I saw it as I cried at dinner tonight in Zanzibar.

Did you see it? What a wonderful movie. Wonderful, I do not use that word often if ever before.

It gave me a headache in a good way, tearing up almost all the way through it. I do not think I was so moved by the message but by the extraordinary artistry of the actors and actresses. The passion and genius they each displayed was unmatched by anything I ever seen. Perhaps it just got me at the particular time I watched it this evening although I do not think there was anything particularly unique about the evening. It would be nice if our country were able to make this year's presidential election not substantially about race and gender. Obama has attempted to rise above these considerations, yet, he finds himself having to respond to the high percentage of support he gets from Blacks and Clinton continually speaks about the high numbers of "hard working White Americans she gets, entirely ignoring the numbers of hard working Black Americans and how great it would be to have a woman president. It Would Be Nice, if we could move beyond these considerations.

Will we Get beyond these considerations once we get to the general election? I think we already have. One will not know that by listening and believing what one hears and sees in the mainstream media, however.

I just responded to two people who sent me various concerns they have about Senator Obama's run for President of the United States. The concerns were essentially about race.

I know there are many people who do not believe in the good the Senator is bringing forth in the world. There are many more people, however, that represent what I call a “New World Consciousness” that has reached a “critical mass” and has changed and is continuing to change the way this country and the world views itself and way we view each other. I see it every day. Neal Donald Walsh writes about this critical mass in one of his Conversations with God book series. Barack Obama's success in this campaign is just one example that evidences this change.

As Senator Obama continually emphasizes, his campaign is not about him, it is about the people. And, there is the view that he and Michelle Obama have consistently articulated; which is to not allow “fear” influence our votes, which also includes our conversations, but rather to “base them on possibility.” Here Mrs. Obama at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZPm0jyBeEU

And still further, there is the “moral courage” Kennedy spoke about in the passage below which Senator Obama clearly demonstrates in sending forth messages or “ripples,” if you will, that “can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance:

Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. The “critical mass Consciousness” that has emerged will cause the change we ALL desire in my view. Consistent with that, are conversations supporters of Senator Obama are having that continue to expose, promote, extend and transmit the message of hope and possibility as opposed to expressions of doubt, hopelessness, mistrust, and the like that limit that which is possible.

Yea, the “chickens will come home to roost,” look out media power men and women. I think you blew it this time.

Back In New York City

Just returned to New York City from Nevis having spent most the winter, you know; since December 12th. Nevis is the smaller island of the St. Kitts and Nevis Federation located in the Eastern Caribbean. It was a fabulous time. And if you know anything about Nevis, you will know Sunshines Bar and Grill. Here, Sunshine and some of his friends are toasting the opening at his new location where he is building anew.

My wife returned about three weeks prior to me. My extended stay was to oversee some minor renovations on our villa there. I am convinced it offers one of the best accommodations on this relatively quiet yet spectacular Caribbean island. Color Line Severed

Congratulations Barack Obama for delivering the most important and meaningful speech the United States of America, and to my knowledge, the world has ever heard.

Over a hundred years ago, W.E.B DuBois asserted "the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color line." Today, well into the 21st century, your direct and honest public discourse on race and politics has severed that line. Anyone that chooses not to see and live through the break is destined to a world that does not work.

Black and White Political Discourse--GOOD FOR AMERICA

I believe the current and ongoing discourse that arose this week on race in the United Stats Presidential campaigns is good and healthy for America and the World. The comments of Reverend Jeremiah Wright and Geraldine Ferraro reflect true and real feelings and views of Black and White Americans. I have heard them. I have spoken them and I suspect you have heard and spoken them as well.

Let us not be so naïve in thinking, believing or feeling that this issue should not have come out, is not relevant and should not be brought out in the open. The views articulated by these two people are expressed under our breaths and behind closed doors everyday.

Perhaps this open and public discussion will finally lead to the end of the prejudices, injustices and fears that exist between Back and White Americans.

Favorite Restaurant on Nevis Relocated

On quite short notice, on Wednesday, March 5, 2008, the internationally acclaimed Sunshines Bar and Grill relocated 300 yards South down the beach from its original location that it has had for almost 20 years. Sunshines has been the single most prominent tourist attraction on Nevis over the period. The restaurant alone “put Nevis on the map.”

Today, the new Sunshines opened at the new location although the infamous Killer Bee punch was available for sale every day along the beach since Wednesday. The panoramic views of Mount Nevis and St. Kitts at a distance stretching out beyond the spectacular Caribbean Sea are breathtaking from the new location. I do not know of another spot on the Caribbean side of the island that is so magnificent.

Sunshine, “the greatest host in the world” and his staff, although somewhat nostalgic at times having left the old location can take pride in having achieved a highly successful move with grace and ease.

What is Hillary Up To

I am a conspiracy theorist.

When the New York Times article came out about Senator McCain having an alleged romantic encounter with a young lobbyist, I predicted that the whole accusation was a staged event. That the intent was to garner up sympathy among voters for such a petty and unsubstantiated charge. If fact, it has turned out to be the case that the senator raised a substantial amount of money in the immediate subsequent days of the charge.

My theory on Hillary is that she and the democratic party must have gotten together to agree to put out this ridiculous smear accusation that Barack Obama is misquoting her in his campaign flyers and not being straight and honest. I can not see how anybody believes that or at least think it will somehow advantage her campaign. The intended result is people will continue to get annoyed by her confrontational and negative tactics and continue to support Obama and she will be able to leave the campaign as some poor soul who was somehow beaten unfairly.

So be it.

I DON'T GET IT!

I got very annoyed yesterday when this fellow told me he was “on the fence” as to which candidate he was supporting for the US presidential election. This is not the first time I have encountered someone with that response. Isn’t it a cop out not to take a position? Isn’t it just a way of avoiding the question? Isn’t the person’s just unwilling to take responsibility for his or her choice or is simply afraid to take a position for whatever reason. I mean if the person does not want to say or really does not have a poison, that is OK, but to say they are on the fence? I do not get it.

To me, saying one is on the fence or that they have not made of their mind is a way of saying they are afraid to make a choice or they are hiding something. I have no problem with that but I feel they should say so. Why not just say, I am afraid to say one way or another. It really drives me batty to say “I am on the fence.”

I got so angry at the person last night, I cursed at him and then attempted to apologize which he was not having. As the evening progressed, I realized I did not trust the person. That is when I said to myself there is something I am bringing to the conversation that was unfair. I realized I was being being unduly judgmental.

What right did I have to be that way? Absolutely no right whatsoever. I know that from an intellectual point of view but why couldn’t I just let the person be with his indecision?

Obama’s campaign is our campaign, not his. Do not expect anything from anybody except yourself. We have a leader that is empowering us as individuals. As he has been saying “change comes from the bottom up not the top down.” That includes having signs and other materials not being available.

On the matter of “hate and racism,” I know for a fact that is entirely a matter of your perception and the kind of listening you bring to the table no matter how much agreement you may be able to get. I mean to be critical here. It is my belief, accept it or not, your choice, that We individually Create our Worlds and how everything shows up to us. And it is only we as individuals that can change that, not the other person not the circumstance. It is clear to me that our next president has the phenomenal ability to hear and listen to all people and not judge them. It is the source of his success.

I have spoken to hundreds of people about Barack and have received similar characterizations as you have and have been very effective in changing what you and I would agree are negative and victim type comments. Our “listening” and how we “be” with people can change that. As Barack says, it is and will not be easy.

It should be obvious to you, particularly with your perception of things that we need your continued support and courage.

I am a proud campaign worker for Barack Obama.

I am 61 years old and the last time I participated in an election campaign was when I ran for vice president of student council in high school which by the way I won.

Last summer, I read the Audacity of Hope and was inspired by Mr. Obama's message that I believe closely aligns with my vision of creating a world community. See www.creatingaworldcommunity.com. However, it was not until September during Harlem Week in New York City when a passer by soliciting volunteers for the Harlem for Obama grassroots group did I decide to work on the campaign. I told the gentleman when asked if I would volunteer that I would since I felt that by doing so it would be giving back something to the community which I felt I had not be doing following my retirement from my job a year and a half ago at the time.

I support Barack Obama because of his clear intention of bringing people together and empowering the individual. No longer will big business dominate the political scene and world affairs. I believe under Barrack’s leadership more people will begin to work together, play together and respect, if not honor, the differences we have among the world's diverse populations.

The one argument I found that people like to present is his lack of experience. I know for a fact that experience is very much overrated at least in the terms it is generally measured. Mr. Obama has substantially more experience than his opponent by holding a vision for a “world that works” and for positive change longer and with more clarity. Then there is the argument can he pull it off. I do not know, but I am very clear if we do not make an attempt it will definitely not happen.

African American In the White House

It is clear to me, and it has been so, since last August, at least that is what I have been saying since then is that Barack Obama will be the next president of the United States.

Yet, it came to mind this evening after my 86 year old mother told me she had voted for him and the Virginia results came in did it come to mind that I am completely loss as to what it will in look like to have an African-American president in the White House with his phenomenal powerful wife. I am trying to picture it and I am really having difficulty.

I think it is because I have NEVER focused on the fact that he is an African-American. My focus has been on his vision for an empowered individual and a "change" vision that will substantially make the world a better place. You watch, people will begin to respect one another and honor one another more across the world regardless of political persuasion, religion, nationality, culture, etc, etc. Yes, just watch that is what is going to happen.

I am so proud to be an American and World Citizen. Together, we are Creating a World Community that works for everyone.

It is Completely A Matter of Belief

Barack Obama spoke possibly his most powerful speech tonight in Richmond, Virginia. It has to be absolutely clear to people that his platform speaks to a better United States of America and a better World. The question I have been dealt is whether he can pull it off. That question evolves from fear based thinking, resignation and cynicism. If that is the choice of thinking some want to have so be it. However, I know as a matter BELIEF that the majority of people in this country are voting for what is possible. As Mr. Obama stated in his speech, change has only occurred at times when the people have believed in possibility.

I am convinced that Mr. Obama's election as the next president of the United States will empower the individual and expand his and her capacity to create a life and a world that works for everyone.

I Am Biased

I do not get it.

If one is for change, perhaps you are not and that is OK. How is it not vividly clear among everyone wanting change does not have Mr. Obama as the clear choice for president of the United States. It is so clear to me that his vision and expressed messages more than any other candidate describes the possibly for change. Is it that people desirous of change are not aligned with the type of change he has been articulating; like bringing people together with different perceptions of the world and empowering the individual. What is it? Is it that people feel he can not pull it off? So what if he fails. At least we tried. The alternative is not to try?

Think, listen and vote your conscious and your best information and knowledge. Either way, the United States of America where I am from and the world is in a better place today.

Fear, A Barrier to Financial Freedom and Wealth

Fear, is one of our greatest challenges in achieving financial freedom , wealth and success we desire in life, at least for me. Determining and making the right choices regarding where to spend my time, energy and money to invest has been my greatest challenge; not so much for the future but for generating current income since that is what I want to substantially increase at this time.
Over the last two years, since quitting my job to pursue several entrepreneurial ventures, I have invested a substantial amount of time, energy and money in many long term ventures including several real estate deals, an investment grade colored diamond, an internet company, stocks and foreign currency. The real estate deals and diamond choices were not quite as difficult to make I suppose, since there is a significant amount of time before I need to actually begin realizing my returns. However, with respect to the others which I went into to generate current income, not knowing whether any of them will do so, I find myself continuing to pursue all of them and not spending sufficient time on any one to be successful. This behavior, I know is entirely out of fear of failing. Although I will not accept the fact that I am failing, I have not on the other hand succeeded anywhere near the level I am intending.

Many of my friends as well as my mentors have suggested I must begin to focus on one thing and at the most two. I have made some attempt at that but I continually find myself seeing something new that I think will quickly begin generating immediate income which as I mentioned earlier is my current desire.

My continued goal is to achieve wealth and financial freedom. I know I will get there. Right now, I am focusing on my foreign exchange trading (forex) and referral business. I have always said people will buy just about anything if it is effectively marketed. I look at the things I purchase when some marketer or marketing initiative has not gotten to me. The TV I have, the computer, the clothes I buy, etc. Than there are the things that some marketer has put before me for which I really have no or very limited use, particularly all the electronics gadgets I buy; and the sweets? Oh yes, can not pass them up.

The single key to a successful business is most certainly marketing. All other aspects of a business can be somewhat suspect without effective marketing, at least over the short term. And, it is the one aspect that many home based businesses do not give sufficient attention. One of the limitations of network marketing companies is they are not able to advertise on the open market as other retail establishments. Independent representatives and independent business owners of these companies also have not been effective in their marketing attempts and have historically limited their marketing to word of mouth and perhaps purchasing some lead generating systems to initiate e-mail campaigns. In addition, the replicating websites their companies provide do not do the job either because they do not measure up well with the search engines. Static websites do little if people do not know about them and are not some how attracted to them.

Effective marketing is the key element to creating wealth and financial freedom. I look back on my career in hospital administration. Marketing was by far the key to our success. I ran a hospital when I was 30 years of age. Marketing is where I placed most of my attention. Back then it included creating a hospital brochure and mailing it out to the community. Hosting a health symposium and sponsoring tennis tournaments and expanding and enhancing our services to meet the total health services needs of the residents that lived in the area. My marketing campaign included networking and joint venturing with other medical providers including my competitors when I could get them to see there was mutual benefit.

Obama Being Scrutinized

I am told he will be undergoing rigorous scrutiny now that he is a front running candidate. However, scrutiny is and will continue be irrelevant. The Things I Say and Do

I woke up this morning with a heavy burden on my heart.
You know, there are times in our lives that we either say or do things that we will regret for the rest of our lives. Those words and deeds can never be taken back and there is not an apology big enough to make a difference.

I surmise, in my case at least, that these incidents occur due to some insecurity, inadequacy or perhaps resentments I have.
There is no need to disrespect or hurt anyone. We must, however, learn to forgive ourselves when we make these errors and move on the best way we can being who we truly are and who we truly want to be.
